How To Track Your New IPhone 7 Early

If you were one of the thousands (millions,) that placed a preorder this past Friday for a new iPhone 7, you already know when to expect it. The more popular models/colors of the new iPhone 7 went out of stock for early delivery pretty quickly with the dates of delivery getting pushed further and further as the preorders went on. It always seems to create a lot of excitement for people waiting for their new iPhone. It creates so much excitement that people even like to track the planes that their phones are on as they fly in from China. Given that we are interested in aviation things as well, I thought it might b interesting to show how you can track your new iPhone 7 too - before Apple even shows that it has shipped! If your new iPhone 7 status from Apple’s order page shows as Preparing for Shipment, it means that your new iPhone 7 is in the process of being shipped out and may actually already be on its way from China. While you are on that page, copy your order number (starting with a W) and you will take it to the next step.

Go here to UPS and enter to Track by Reference. For your reference number, you will enter your order number from above minus the last 2 digits of the number. If this does not show anything and your phone is showing Preparing for Shipment, try your cell number that the phone will be registered to. I have had it work both ways in the past. This year, it worked with the Apple Order Number. Also, enter your destination country and destination zip code to bring it up. If it does not show your tracking number at first, register for the MyUPS to see the detailed information. Once your new iPhone 7 hits the Preparing for Shipment status, you should also be able to find your serial number for your new iPhone 7 on the Apple Profile page - here. There are some sites that you can plug this number into to find your date of manufacture and see which factory it was made in. After you get your UPS tracking number, you can go here to this FlightAware page to see which UPS plane your phone is on and track it to the US. Yes, that is definitely for the very serious iPhone 7 / aviation fan but it might be something interesting to watch anyway! When it comes to color, the iPhone 7 is clearly superior. The iPhone 7 Plus gets even better. If you can stomach its larger size and higher price tag, you’ll get a phone with not one but two lenses. The first is the 23mm lens found in the iPhone 7. The second is a 56mm lens that lets you physically zoom in. A physical zoom is always preferable to the digital zoom found in the majority of smartphones. Digital zoom leads to a splotchy mess of a photograph with big digital artifacts everywhere. Physical “optical” zoom leads to far fewer artifacts. In fact the picture of the iPhone at the top of this page was taken with the iPhone 7 Plus’s zoom lens (in JPEG!). It’s a good clean shot, but real sticklers for perfection will notice the telltale blur you still get from a digital photo. The big Steve Jobs doll in this photo looks great. You can see the light fuzz he’s covered in, the small cracks in his eyebrows, and the fluff of his hair. But look at the fuzz around his ear. The JPEG process muted the details of the fuzz and made it blocky and digital looking. It’s worse on the little Steve Jobs doll’s face. All the fine detail is gone and replaced by a patina of digital detritus.

You may be aware that Apple has replaced the physical Home button in iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with a new pressure sensitive button that powers a built-in Taptic engine. The latest technology of the Home button makes it capable of detecting the amount of pressure you exert on it and provides feedback depending on the task you are doing. Due to the new virtual Home button and the way it works, the method used to put your device into DFU mode or hard reset is quite different than past iPhone models. We already showed how you can put your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into DFU mode, but in this tutorial, we will show how easy it is to hard reset your new iPhone. Step 1: Press and hold the Lock/Wake button on the right side of your iPhone. Step 2: At the same time, press and hold down the Volume Down button on the left side while keeping the Lock/Wake button pressed. Step 3: Keep holding both the buttons until the screen turns black and then switches back on to display the Apple Logo. Step 4: Wait for a couple of seconds until your iPhone boots up completely and displays the Lock screen. That’s all you need to do to force reset your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. The method is quite similar to older iPhone models except that you have to hold the Volume Down button this time rather than the Home button. Hard reset is just a forced reboot that is usually used in troubleshooting problems on your iPhone such as when it freezes or slows down to such an extent that you cannot interact with anything properly.
