Updated on Wednesday, May 31, 2017: Added a video guide to set up hotspot. Why Should I Create a Wi-Fi Hotspot with My iPhone, Turning your iPhone 6s/6/5s/5 into a hotspot has many potential benefits. Let's say you are camping outdoors and have either your tablet or PC with you, but no Wi-Fi in sight. You even cannot log into your Facebook or going through your mail. However, as long as you've got an iPhone with a 3G or 4G data connection with you, your problem can be easily solved using Personal Hotspot. Personal Hotspot is a feature of iOS that lets iPhone running iOS 4.3 and higher share their wireless data connection with other nearby devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB (the feature is also referred to by its generic name, tethering). By setting up hotspot on your iPhone, you can connect any type of devices to the internet through your iPhone.

These devices include Windows PC, Mac computer, Android phones, iPad, portable gaming consoles and anything at all that can connect to Wi-Fi. Navigate to Settings, Cellular and tap Personal Hotspot to begin the setup process. Turn on Personal Hotspot. Look for your iPhone's name as an available Wi-Fi network. Enter the password listed in the Wi-Fi Password field when prompted to do so. Now you can use Bluetooth, USB or Wi-Fi to connect your other device to your iPhone. Don't forget to turn the Personal Hotspot switch off when you're finished using it to avoid extra data charges. If your cellular carrier doesn't include the feature in your cellular data plan, you may not see the Personal Hotspot option at all on your iPhone’s settings screen. You may have to pay extra to gain access to it. Even if you have unlimited data, it is probably you have a limited amount of tethering data. Your carrier may charge you extra if you need more tethering data. Check your cellular plan for more details about your plan’s hotspot, or tethering, capabilities. Your Wi-Fi tethering will also drain your phone's battery more quickly. If possible, connect your iPhone to a power source — or plug it into your laptop via USB cable — while tethering. Be sure to disable the hotspot when you're not using it, too.

The most exciting feature that came with the Verizon iPhone was the inclusion of a mobile hotspot app. Here's how to get Wi-Fi tethering without paying a monthly fee. The process is actually ridiculously simple, but you should know it isn't free. First, you need to jailbreak your iPhone. Second, download the MyWi app from the Cydia store (which you'll find on your jailbroken iPhone). You may have to search for it, but chances are you'll just see it advertised on the Cydia front page. To buy it, you'll need to authorize your account through Google or Facebook and Amazon or Paypal. Once you've purchased MyWi, click the install button in Cydia and it'll install it on your iPhone. Finally, launch MyWi application from your iPhone's home screen and click the Wi-Fi button up top (the second button from the left). All you have to do is flip the "WiFi Hotspot" toggle and you're ready to connect any other device via Wi-Fi. What you should probably do is enable WEP security, however, so you're not sharing your connection with just anybody. It still does eat into your data plan, after all. While WEP isn't the most secure, it is better than nothing. You can enable WEP security by tapping the the "WEP Security" button and entering a 10-digit passcode. Unless you own a laptop or tablet with 4G connectivity, your mobile internet connection will likely be through your smartphone unless you’re happy to pay for public Wi-Fi. Sometimes public Wi-Fi isn’t available, though, so then what, The good news is it’s possible to use your smartphone as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, and share its data connection with your Wi-Fi-only tablet or a laptop. This setup is called tethering or internet sharing, and most smartphones provide this feature, including iPhones. It works in the same way as a mobile Wi-Fi router, but with no extra hardware required. Once you’ve turned on tethering, any device with a wireless connection can connect to the internet via your iPhone’s data connection. Regardless of the connection method, it’s important to check whether your mobile tariff allows tethering before using your iPhone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. In some cases, the mobile operator can prevent the option from appearing on your handset if tethering isn’t part of the deal — iPhone owners will notice that Personal Hotspot simply doesn’t show up in the General settings menu. In other cases, it’s physically possible to set up tethering but if it’s disallowed on your tariff you could find yourself with a warning or even being cut off for breaking the rules. Some operators are more lenient than others, but always check if you’re not sure.
