That would be up from the 2750mAh offering in the 6S Plus, so perhaps the removal of the headphone port has freed up a bit of space inside - every cloud, eh, It's not just an increase in battery size which Apple reckons will see the 7 Plus last longer - it's also the new A10 Fusion chip, which has two low-power and two high-power cores. The lower-power cores handle basic tasks, such as web browsing and emails, while consuming less power, and the more powerful duo come into play when you fire-up a game or an HD movie.
Whether that has a marked effect on the battery isn't that clear, but we can report that the battery life on the iPhone 7 Plus is very good. That's in line with the Android flagship competition, with a full day's use the benchmark for battery performance now. If you do find yourself running low, iOS 10 retains the low-power mode which Apple introduced with iOS 9, helping you get the most out of the last dregs of your charge. Drop below 20% and the 7 Plus will prompt you to switch on the power-saving mode - but you can manually control this from the settings menu too.
And it comes at a price. A very high price. The highest price of any iPhone ever, in fact. With the iPhone X there’s only one display size to fit all - the 5.8in OLED - so there’s no quibbling about Plus editions or anything like that. 999, and that’s just the 64GB version. 1,149 to be precise. For all that money you’d hope this phone would be the very best Apple has to offer, crammed full of next-gen tech, and far and away superior to all the other models in terms of features and capabilities.
The battery life is decent, but it doesn’t outperform the Plus models of the iPhone family. There’s no doubt the iPhone X is the best iPhone. The expense is undoubtedly going to be off-putting for some, and it is perhaps priced higher than it should be. But at least here, unlike with the iPhone 8, you can feel like you’re getting something special for that outlay. You can see where the money has gone.
As part of an upcoming iOS update, Apple will be adding new features to the battery tab in Settings that provide some visibility into the health of the battery, something users have wanted for years. While this won't fix the problem, it will let users target potential issues before they affect performance and get them rectified.
