Gmail offers this service at no cost; all you need is a smartphone that can interface with its Exchange server. The iPhone, iPod touch and iPad are all compatible. If you already have an active Gmail account that receives email you don't want pushed to your iPhone, it's probably a good idea to set up a second Gmail account exclusively for POP3 push. That way, you won't get the regular Gmail pushed to your iPhone alongside the POP3 email. Log into your Gmail account.
In the Settings menu, select Accounts and Import from the top line of options. You can configure Gmail to check up to five POP3 email accounts. Most users will only need one or two. On the next screen, you'll enter your POP3 email account settings. You must know each of these details about your POP3 email account and enter them exactly; if you're unsure, contact your email provider or check their support section. Gmail also has the ability to allow you to send email using the POP3 address.
You can select whether or not you'd like to do so on the next screen; it's probably a good idea - that way, if you reply to an email message, your POP3 address will show as the sender. After all settings have been configured, Gmail will send an email to the address you've added to confirm that you own it.
Verify ownership of the account and you're all done! If you want to add additional POP3 email address to Gmail, just repeat the process above. At this point, we've instructed Gmail to check for new mail on your POP3 email account. Gmail will check this account for new messages and add them to your Gmail inbox as they come in. Now it's time to setup your iPhone. At this point, we're ready to configure the iPhone.
From the Home screen, tap Settings, then Mail, Contacts, Calendar. Select Add Account and then Microsoft Exchange at the top of the screen. Do not use the Gmail setting. The next few screens will walk you through adding your Gmail Exchange account for push. In the Exchange menu, enter your Gmail email address in the Email field. Don't enter anything for Domain.
Enter your Gmail address again in the Username field, then the password. In the Description field, you can give the account any name you like (Gmail, POP3 Gmail, whatever). Finally, you'll be asked what you want to sync with this Gmail/Google account on the iPhone. You can select just Mail, or choose to sync calendar entries and contacts with Gmail as well.
If you're already syncing your contacts with another service, or your PC or Mac, you'll probably not want to sync them with Gmail - choosing to sync contacts can erase existing entries on the iPhone or result in duplicates. If you want to switch to syncing your contacts with Gmail, Google provides instructions for getting your iPhone's contacts into Gmail using a PC or Mac. Syncing your contacts with Google is a great way to keep them up-to-date and safe in the Cloud, just be mindful that they're backed-up beforehand so that you won't lose them.
Your iPhone is now configured to receive push email from Gmail - and Gmail is checking your POP3 email account(s) and pushing new messages to your iPhone as they arrive. Accounts and Import tab. In the Send mail as section, select the POP3 address as the default. Below that option, in the When replying to a message section, select Always reply from default address.
With these options selected, when you reply to an email on your iPhone, it will appear to the recipient as though you used the POP3 email to reply. This tutorial uses Gmail to push POP3 email to your iPhone. You can also use other Exchange enabled email services like Live Hotmail to do this; I've chosen Gmail because I feel it's the best solution for this POP3-push workaround. Gmail is highly configurable.
